Asphalt Shingle · San Fernando Valley

Asphalt Shingle Roofing
in Sherman Oaks & the Valley

Architectural and cool-roof shingles for the Valley's ranch, bungalow and two-story homes, installed over a full tear-off with new underlayment and flashing.

Asphalt shingle re-roof planning range (2026): $12,000–$25,000 for a typical 1,500–2,500 sq ft Valley roof, or $600–$1,200 per square installed. Typically 2–4 days on site.

Shingle is the one covering LADBS issues as an express permit (Class A or B, under 6 lb/sq ft over solid sheathing), and in the City of Los Angeles the shingle must be a CRRC-rated cool-roof product when more than half the roof is replaced. Roofing RIB Company installs Class A cool-roof architectural shingle as standard across the Valley.

Roofing RIB Company installs architectural asphalt shingle roofs across Sherman Oaks and the San Fernando Valley: full tear-off, decking repair, synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water membrane, new flashing and vents, then a Class A, CRRC-rated cool-roof shingle with the manufacturer warranty registered in your name. LADBS express permit or Burbank online permit pulled. Free inspection: (818) 619-2948.

Shingle Done Properly

The Valley's Default Roof,
Built to Outlast the Heat

Nine out of ten roofs on the Valley floor are asphalt shingle, and most of them were installed to a price: three-tab shingle over old felt, laid over the previous layer, with the original flashing reused. That is why a shingle roof in Van Nuys or North Hollywood that should last 25 years is leaking at 15.

A shingle roof from Roofing RIB Company is built differently. Everything comes off to the deck. Rotted sheathing is replaced. Synthetic underlayment goes down across the field, self-adhered membrane in every valley and around every penetration, new drip edge at the eaves and rakes, new flashing at every wall and chimney. Then an architectural (laminated) shingle in a Class A assembly, nailed to the manufacturer's high-wind pattern, with ridge or low-profile vents sized so the attic actually exhausts in a Valley summer.

Color matters here more than anywhere. The City of Los Angeles requires a CRRC-rated cool-roof shingle on most residential replacements, and even where it does not, a cool-roof color keeps the surface temperature down, slows the asphalt from drying out and takes load off the air conditioning in Woodland Hills or Van Nuys in August. The major manufacturers now make cool-roof shingles in greys, browns and charcoals that look like any other roof.

The result is a roof that runs 20 to 30 years in our climate instead of 15, with a registered manufacturer warranty and a closed permit in the file.

Shingle Options

Architectural, Cool-Roof
and Class A

01

Architectural (Laminated) Shingle

The standard we install: a thicker two-layer shingle with a 110–130 mph wind rating and a dimensional look, in the 30-year and lifetime-warranty lines.

02

Cool-Roof Rated Colors

CRRC-rated shingles that meet the City of Los Angeles cool-roof requirement and the 2025 Energy Code, in greys, browns and charcoals that read like a normal roof.

03

Class A Fire-Rated Assembly

Shingle over the underlayment package that earns the Class A rating required in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone and recommended everywhere in the Valley.

04

Impact-Resistant Shingle

Class 4 impact-rated shingle for homeowners who want the toughest asphalt option and, with some insurers, a premium credit.

05

Ventilation & Attic Heat

Ridge vents, low-profile vents and intake at the eaves sized to the attic, because a shingle roof over a 140°F attic cooks from below.

06

Low-Slope Sections Done Right

Shingle is not rated below a 2:12 pitch; the flat sections over garages and additions get a torch-down or TPO membrane tied into the shingle properly.

Shingle Across the Valley

Built for 150°F
Roof Surfaces

The Valley is the hardest place in Los Angeles to be an asphalt shingle. Summer afternoons in Woodland Hills, Van Nuys and Burbank run ten to fifteen degrees above the basin, and a dark roof surface passes 150°F. Asphalt dries out, granules shed, and a budget three-tab shingle that was sold as a 20-year roof is brittle by year 12.

Three things change that: a thicker architectural shingle, a cool-roof color that reflects instead of absorbing, and an attic that vents. We spec all three on every shingle roof, which is why the roofs we replaced on the 1950s ranches in Van Nuys and Valley Glen last are not the roofs we will be replacing again in a decade.

Permits are simple for shingle. In the City of Los Angeles a re-roof with a Class A or B shingle under 6 lb/sq ft over solid sheathing is an LADBS express permit with no plan check; in Burbank it is a Tier 1 online permit. We pull it the day we schedule the job.

How It Works

Three Steps.
No Surprises.

01

Free Roof Inspection

A roofer, not a salesperson, walks every slope, checks the flashing, penetrations and attic side, and photographs what they find. You get a straight answer on repair versus replacement.

02

Written Quote

An itemized written quote for the asphalt shingle roofing: tear-off, decking allowance, underlayment, covering, flashing, vents, permit and haul-away. The price in the quote is the price on the invoice unless you change the scope.

03

Permit, Build, Inspect

We pull the permit, protect the property, complete the work in the quoted window and schedule the final inspection. You get the closed permit and the material warranty paperwork at the end.

★★★★★

The Roofing RIB Company team came out to look at our roof since we had a few leaks. He was really professional and explained the whole roof structure and what caused the leak. We ended up replacing the whole roof because it was almost 35 years old; the price was reasonable compared to the other quotes we got. Would definitely recommend Roofing RIB Company.

I've had many roofers come to check my roof and got a wide variety of quotes, sales gimmicks and outright lies. This company was nothing like that. They called right back when I asked for a quote and made an appointment. When they showed up, they took measurements, explained their process, and gave me a copy of their insurance and bond documents, and a clear and simple contract that made sense. They came on the agreed day and finished the job quickly and efficiently. It looks good.

Questions We Hear
About Asphalt Shingle Roofing

Planning range for 2026: $12,000–$25,000 for a typical 1,500–2,500 sq ft Valley roof, or $600–$1,200 per square installed including tear-off and disposal. Two-layer tear-offs, steep pitches and decking repairs push a quote toward the top of the range.

20 to 30 years for an architectural shingle in a cool-roof color with a properly vented attic; less for three-tab shingle or a dark roof over a sealed attic. The Valley heat is the limiting factor, not rain.

In the City of Los Angeles, yes, when more than half the roof is replaced: the shingle must carry a Cool Roof Rating Council label. Under the 2025 Energy Code a similar rule applies to most steep-slope re-roofs in our climate zone unless an exception such as R-38 attic insulation or no attic ducts applies. Cool-roof shingles now come in ordinary roof colors, so there is little reason not to.

A roof assembly tested to the highest fire-resistance class. Most architectural shingles reach Class A with the right underlayment; it is required on parcels in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone and is what we install everywhere.

No. Shingle is not rated below a 2:12 pitch and will leak. The flat section over a garage conversion or addition gets a torch-down or TPO membrane and is tied into the shingle with proper flashing.

The manufacturer's material warranty for the shingle line you choose, registered in your name, plus our workmanship warranty in writing in the contract. We hand both over with the closed permit.
