Architectural or 3-Tab Shingles: Which Should You Use?
Both are asphalt shingle. One is thicker, lasts longer in Valley heat and now dominates what suppliers stock.
Architectural shingle is the better buy for almost every Valley re-roof. It typically lasts 20–30 years in Valley heat against 12–20 for 3-tab, handles wind better, comes in more cool-roof rated colors and is what most suppliers stock. Architectural re-roofs plan at $600–$1,200 per square; 3-tab costs somewhat less per square but rarely less per year of roof life.
Both can be installed as Class A assemblies and both qualify for the LADBS express permit as coverings under 6 lb per square foot.
Architectural and 3-tab at a glance
| Architectural (dimensional) | 3-tab | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Two or more laminated layers, varied thickness | One flat layer with three tabs |
| Typical life in Valley heat | 20–30 years | 12–20 years |
| Wind performance | Typically higher manufacturer wind ratings | Lower; tabs lift more easily |
| Look | Shadowed, textured, closer to shake or slate | Flat, uniform rows |
| Cost (2026 planning) | $600–$1,200 per square | Somewhat less per square; quoted per roof |
| Cool-roof colors | Wide range of CRRC-rated colors | Fewer rated colors stocked |
Why does architectural shingle last longer here?
It is thicker and heavier, with a laminated second layer that adds mass and shades the mat. In the Valley, heat and UV are what age asphalt; the extra material and better granule coverage resist that longer, and a cool-roof color with a vented attic pushes either type toward the top of its range.
Does 3-tab still make sense?
Occasionally, for a detached garage, a shed, or a short-term rental property where the lowest price on the day matters most. On a house you plan to keep, the shorter life of 3-tab usually costs more over time than the difference in the quote.
Do both meet the cool-roof rule?
When more than half of a home's roof in the City of Los Angeles is replaced, the new covering must be a cool roof product labeled by the Cool Roof Rating Council. Both types are made in rated colors, but the selection is wider in architectural lines. Check the rating label for the exact color you choose.
When does architectural win?
- Any house you plan to keep for more than a few years.
- Exposed slopes and hillside homes where wind lifts tabs.
- When you want a cool-roof color in a shade you like.
When does 3-tab win?
- Outbuildings and sheds.
- Matching a small repair on an existing 3-tab roof.
- A very short ownership horizon where price on the day leads.
What we recommend
Use a Class A, CRRC-rated architectural shingle over synthetic underlayment, with ice-and-water membrane in the valleys and at penetrations and balanced attic ventilation. Ask for the shingle line and color by name in the written quote.
Where does this come up in the Valley?
The typical roofing jobs in the neighborhoods where this choice comes up most:
- Sherman Oaks: Shingle tear-off and re-roof on the 1950s ranches, flat-section leak repairs where a low-slope addition meets the main roof, and tile underlayment replacement on the south-of-Ventura homes.
- Studio City: Re-roofs on the Colfax Meadows ranches, canyon-house leak repairs at skylights and dormers, and Class A replacements in Fryman and Laurel Canyon.
- Van Nuys: Two-layer tear-offs on the 1950s tracts, flat-roof repairs over converted garages, and full shingle replacements before a sale.
- Encino: Tile underlayment replacement on the 1980s–90s tile roofs, large shingle re-roofs on the estate lots, and hillside repairs where tile meets a flat section.
- Valley Village: Bungalow re-roofs with new plywood decking, flashing repairs at older chimneys, and flat-section repairs where additions tie into the main roof.
- Valley Glen: Multi-layer tear-offs on the 1940s–50s ranches, torch-down repairs over converted garages, and full re-roofs timed before the winter rains.

Questions We
Hear About This
Typically 20 to 30 years in Valley heat, toward the top of that range with a cool-roof color and a well-ventilated attic.
Typically 12 to 20 years in Valley heat, often well short of the warranty term printed on the bundle.
For a house you plan to keep, usually yes: the longer life and better wind performance cost less per year of roof than 3-tab.
Not on the same visible slope; they look different and lie differently. A repair should match the existing type.
Most architectural lines can be installed as Class A assemblies over the right underlayment. Check the product's fire classification in the quote, which matters in a fire zone.
